Happy full moon in Leo!

Tomorrow’s full moon feels fiery and exciting. With a trine to Mars in Sagittarius and Venus’ entry into Aries, energy abounds. Fire energy can be warm, playful, optimistic, adventurous and exciting. It can also be dramatic, combative and inflammatory. An abundance of fire can help us kick into gear, it can also kick over well-placed plans with ill-timed tantrums. As usual, what we do with the energy that comes our way is up to each of us as individuals. Check your natal chart to see which houses Leo and Aquarius rule for you. This axis is stimulated and energized by your attention this weekend.

In Medical Astrology, the Leo/Aquarius axis represents the balance of the heart (Leo) and the circulation (Aquarius). In the last weeks as I’ve been spending time meditating with this idea, one thing I keep thinking/feeling is that heart energy must remain in movement. When the heart’s radiance becomes shut-down, stagnant or compressed there is no energy for external awareness or relationship. Similarly, if there is excessive attention to the outward, relational, informational realms, the heart can become easily depleted and its anchor of self-knowing becomes unmoored.

Our nervous systems and relational pathways begin to develop in our earliest impressions. Our gestational experiences, infancies and childhoods are when we form our expectations of safety, security, and the “right to be” as we are. Leo is associated with the heart-full, unabashed, pure expression of children. Aquarius is associated with the familial, group and societal habits that shape our development. To work with the Leo/Aquarius balance is to work with our deepest child-selves and the ways we’ve learned to mold our pure natures into the needs and demands of those around us.

For this full moon’s meditation, I’m offering an exploratory somatic movement practice that I’ve been calling, Living Your Best Life. I like this name because I feel that this practice helps me connect to my “best-ness” (and, of course, this is a very Leo idea!) not in a hierarchical, comparative way, but in an essential, soulful way. The techniques I’m offering are bonding practices to help ground our beings into stable attachments with Earth, sensing practices to come into the naturally erotic curiosity in our skin, pushing and weight balance practices to help us find playful connection with points of contact, and finally, sensory awareness practices that help open loving and receptive informational pathways.

This practice can be modified and adapted for most people. It requires about an hour of your time and attention and an open space where you can move around without worrying what you look like. I want to offer a very special thanks to Suniti Dernovsek who is an absolute joy and brilliant somatic teacher in Portland OR who I’ve had the privilege of sharing community with for over a decade! I was lucky enough to attend one of her somatic movement classes where she reminded me of the brilliance of skin-awareness and deeply inspired the meditation I made for you.
