Break Down to Breakthrough - Embodied Astrology for Capricorn Season - December 21, 2019-January 20, 2020

Well… Where do we begin?

We’ve come to end of the year, the end of a decade, and it seems that in many ways, we’re truly at the end of an era. The moment of NOW feels poignant, terrifying, and ripe with possibility. Will the chaos of governments cracking open crack open revolt and liberation or set the structures of inequity more firmly in place? Will we (as a global we) find the resources we need internally to reject the resource-depletion of our planet and fellow living beings, or will we (as in the we who are privileged enough to participate) continue to reach for what’s convenient at the expense of everything else? I can’t imagine there are many people who aren’t asking themselves deep questions at this moment. Will we survive? What will we do? How do I change? Where do I go from here? Is there anything that can make a difference?

I certainly don’t know the answers to any of these questions, but I feel so grateful for astrology at this time. At the very least, astrology provides a framework and context for this chaos. At the very least, it presents the possibility of educational outcomes and evolutionary potentials.

Capricorn Season is going to be intense and probably extremely challenging. There’s no way around it. With two eclipses, Uranus’ station direct and the culmination of the Saturn/Pluto conjunction (square Eris), this season will force a reckoning for everyone. The reckoning may be subtle and internal, or explicit and chaotic, but reckoning there will be. We need to make new choices and we need to act fast. Our bodies can’t wait. Our earth can’t wait. Now is the time. It will take more than impeaching presidents and passing laws. Our changes need to be total. They need to be deep. They need to be lasting.

We are facing the residue and consequences of long-term influences–many of which originated with generations long gone. The last time Pluto was in Capricorn was 1762-1778 when the Declaration of Independence was signed, codifying the theft of Indigenous land and the governmental authority of white slaveholders. The last time Saturn conjoined Pluto in Capricorn was in 1518, a year that saw over 50% of native populations in The Americas reduced as a consequence of European-imported violence and illnesses. 1518 was also the year King Charles I of Spain authorized shipment of African peoples directly to The Americas, the result of which was over 12 million bodies moved without consent and forced into slavery, over 2 million killed or died en route, and a legacy of racism, inequity, systemic injustice, poverty and global anti-blackness that persists and thrives to this day.

These legacies are inseparable from environmental destruction and climate chaos. They are inseparable from big pharma, big agra, big military and the incarceration state. They are inseparable from the conservative estimate of 50 million people enslaved today. They are inseparable from child labor, resource depletion, fossil fuel dependency, gun violence, violence against women, homophobia, transphobia, rape and sex-trafficking. These legacies create suffering for each and every one of us all day, every day, because, regardless of circumstance, there is no way this level of atrocity does not contaminate the soil, air and water we share. There is no way it does not contaminate our spirits.

But here we are too, in a moment when there is increasing awareness of trauma and a rapidly growing vocabulary for intersectional experiences and intergenerational inheritances. Here we are in a moment when many are recognizing the power of refusal, the power of tenderness, the power of reparation, the power of direct, unmediated connection to their intuition and to Spirit. Here we are in a moment when children and women are taking the lead, and when Black , Brown and Indigenous voices are rising. And, here we are in a moment that has us pressed between a rock and a hard place, a moment that is, perhaps, exactly what we need to make a shift.
