The evil eye (el a’ain in Arabic) in SWANA cultures and many others throughout the world is believed to be both projected onto someone, and also received through the eyes. It can also be the energy of envy or jealousy. The eye is often thought to be given and received interpersonally, but oppressive forces that seek to steal life, agency and futures, through colonialism and empire, can have a similar impact.
El a’ain also means “spring” of water, and offers a sense of the life-giving portal that is our eyes and our body’s other orifices, through the attention they offer and draw in. The eye is the malady but is also the cure. Like any portal, we can be pulled into its vortex towards the current of that which takes us from relationship and agency or we can be guided towards transformation and deeper forms of connection.
In these times of intensifying authoritarianism, fascism and genocide, our protective spells must be more potent than ever and unapologetically affirm and protect life. As we strengthen our structures of protection, we must also sharpen our discernment about what and who we are protecting, and find deeper relationships with the underlying impulses that drive us.
In this session we learn about Saturn-Neptune in Aries and their relationship to the concept of the evil eye through a SWANA lens, as a malady, as well as its lesser known healing potentials. We work spiritually and with embodied practices that support connection and relationship to the Aries-ruled eyes, the Neptune-ruled pineal gland, and strengthen our relational and energetic grid using the element of fire. The session culminates in a ceremony of protection and deepening of collective attunement for the lands we inhabit - both our homelands and our collective bodies.

Marwa Nasser Metzler — guide and guardian of ancestral wisdom, weaving together a tapestry of identities and expertise. My journey began in the heart of Palestine, born in Jerusalem and raised in Bethlehem, a Christian Palestinian heritage that forms the bedrock of my spirit. My path for knowledge led me to Beirut, Lebanon, where I studied theology and met my husband, an Austrian pipe organ builder—together we have raised two wonderful sons who are now young adults.
I seek to eloquently embody and activate the feminine, matriarchal rituals and practices that have been silenced for generations. My work is a conscious invocation of a different paradigm: it is fuelled by the power of love, vs the love of power, as my spiritual teacher Caroline Myss states. Through guidance, supervision, and sacred practice, I walk with others to reclaim the inherited wisdom of our bodies and our lands, weaving a future where healing is rooted, resonant, and truly our own. Since the onset of the genocide in Gaza in October 2023, my focus has crystallised into an urgent, heartfelt mission: Decolonizing our healing practices and reconnecting with our indigenous rituals, particularly the sacred wisdom of our matrimonial ancestors.
