Mars, (ruler of the recent conjunction between Saturn and Neptune in Aries) is far more than the chaotic warrior we see depicted in contemporary astrological symbolism, but rather a crucial guardian and protector of land and soil, acting as a shepherd to people, creatures, and plants by warding off harmful forces. Their multitudes merge warrior strength, underworld knowing, agricultural tending and land defense.
Mars’ counterpart in Sumerian mythology is Nergal, guardian of the underworld, steward of grief and protector of the dead. Mars/Nergal and other resonant archetypes remind us that practices surrounding grief, transformation, death and dying are imperative to the vitality and aliveness of our communities (which is why they are so often targeted by colonial forces) and must be the foundation of our action and activism.
In this first session in our series, we will lay the foundation for working with Mars (and adjacent archetypes) as a planetary guide and ancestor who shows us how to build heat as the basis for action from the depths of the soil upward, as well as Saturn and Neptune in Aries as a map for rooting into ancestral remembrance, death and grieving, and relinquishing false expressions of control to make room for more personal and collective authenticity, relationality, and aliveness to shine through.
Aziz Bisanz is a somatic therapist, cultural worker, organizer, performer and astrologer living in South Minneapolis, which is currently a site of intense federal occupation.
